1876: Arnold Peter Møller was born on 2 October 1876 in Dragør.
Arnold Peter Møller was born on 2 October 1876 in Dragør.
Shipowner A.P. Møller, born on 2 October 1876 in Dragør, son of Captain Peter Mærsk Møller and Ane (Anna) Mærsk Møller (née Hans Jeppesen), married 1910 to Chastine Estelle Mc-Kinney, two daughters and two sons.
In 1884 the family moved to Svendborg, and Arnold Peter Møller was sent to the local private “realskole”. Having passed the leaving exam at Svendborg Private Realskole, he was apprenticed to merchant I.N. Bonnesen in Sorø, and three years later, in 1895, he started as trainee with two of his father’s business contacts in Newcastle, England. In 1897 he went to the East Prussian city of Königsberg – today Kaliningrad – where A.P. Møller was employed by an export firm, and in 1899 he moved to St. Petersburg, where he joined a shipbroking firm.
In February 1904 A.P. Møller returned to Danmark to take up the post as manager of the chartering department of C.K. Hansen, one of the major shipping and brokerage firms in Copenhagen of that time. Later in the same year he founded A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg (The Steampship Company Svendborg) together with his father, Captain P.M. Møller.
For further information about the history of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group we recommend the books “With Constant Care…” and “A.P. Møller and the Danish Oil”.
“With Constant Care…” unfolds the story about shipowner A.P. Møller and his many achievements until his death in 1965.
“A.P. Møller and the Danish Oil” is the story about A.P. Møller’s involvement in oil and gas in Denmark during the period 1960-1997.
1904: It all began in 1904
At the age of 28 Arnold Peter Møller established, together with his father, Captain Peter Mærsk Møller, A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg (the Steamship Company Svendborg) and bought a second-hand vessel, which was renamed SVENDBORG. The company had its first office in A.P. Møller’s childhood home “Villa Anna” in Svendborg.
As early as 1886 A.P. Møller’s father, Captain P.M. Møller, had invested in the steamer LAURA. He was continuously endeavouring to arouse an interest in a steampship company in Svendborg – preferably a family business firmly anchored in southern Funen.
But it was not until A.P. Møller started as day-to-day manager of the chartering department of C.K. Hansen in Copenhagen at the beginning of 1904 that things began to develop. On 16 April 1904 a “ … meeting with the intention of forming a steamship company registered in Svendborg” was held in Svendborg.
In addition to P.M. Møller as managing owner and A.P. Møller, the elected members of the first board of directors were Joh. Rosenthal and Axel Nielsen, both merchants, Th. Petersen, the owner of a steam mill, and Johannes Lacoppidan Petersen, a solicitor – all prominent citizens of Svendborg.

1912: The Steamship Company of 1912
Shipowner A.P. Møller established Dampskibsselskabet af 1912, Aktieselskab (the Steamship Company of 1912) based in Copenhagen.
The ambitious A.P. Møller did not always agree with the other board members in The Steamship Company Svendborg. He therefore wished to form a new steamship company in which he himself would have the final say.
On 22 August 1912, the Steamship Company of 1912 was formed with the object of “operating a freight business with steamships”. A.P. Møller became the managing owner, while A.W. Christensen and R. Christensen both became board members.

1921: From Steam to Diesel
The first diesel vessel, LEISE MÆRSK, was delivered from Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd.
In 1921 A.P. Møller received its first motor-powered newbuilding, and the m.s. LEISE MÆRSK was in many respects revolutionary. It was the world’s first single screw diesel vessel; the world’s first vessel with the economical long-stroke engine; and the first diesel vessel to be put into tramping. The vessel made its maiden voyage around the world and appeared in the international shipping magazines. In 1928 A.P. Møller established a liner service, and on 12 July the same year the m.s. LEISE MÆRSK departed as the first vessel from Baltimore in the service between the American east coast via the Panama Canal to the Far East and back. The m.s. LEISE MÆRSK became A.P. Møller’s first loss after the German occupation of Denmark. While sailing under British flag, the vessel was torpedoed on 23 November 1940 at Pentland Firth on its way from Nova Scotia to the River Clyde. 15 Danish seamen died.

1940: Occupation and Departure
Denmark was occupied by Germany. Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller was taken on as partner in the Firm of A.P. Møller in May 1940 and immediately after moved to the USA.
When the German troops invaded Denmark on 9 April 1940, 36 of the Maersk fleet’s vessels, all of them large tankers and liners, were away from Danish waters and therefore outside A.P. Møller’s control. The evening before the invasion A.P. Møller’s senior staff met “to go through the entire fleet, every voyage of every ship, its freight commitment, the charter party and bill of lading, and see what instructions it would be appropriate to give each individual ship”. The outcome was “PERMANENT SPECIAL INSTRUCTION ONE”, which was sent out to all vessels.
It was endeavoured to carry on the activities of the company from Copenhagen, but due to difficulties with communication among other things, it was decided that Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller was to go to the USA to manage the activities. Emma and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller were married on 22 May 1940, and two days later Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller was taken on as partner in the Firm of A.P. Møller. Already on 10 June the couple arrived in New York, and it took more than seven years before they returned to Denmark.
In co-operation with other Danish shipowner representatives in the USA, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller attempted to employ the Danish vessels, until the American Government took command of them in June 1941. After that he was mainly engaged in preparations for peacetime.
1959: Dansk Industri Syndikat A/S
In 1959 the Shipping Companies acquired the controlling interest in Dansk Industri Syndikat A/S.
In 1930 A.P. Møller acquired a shareholding in the company A/S Dansk Rekylriffel Syndikat, corresponding to 15 % of the total share capital. The Syndicate had not paid dividend to the shareholders since 1920, and A.P. Møller effected the purchase partly to help another Danish company out of a difficult situation and partly because he found it important for defence reasons that Denmark had an arms factory. The special conditions that applied to an arms factory during the war resulted in A.P. Møller withdrawing its representation from the board of directors.
After the war the manufacture of civilian products, such as fuel gauges, wing pumps, motor cycles and production lathes, was pushed forward, and in 1963 the arms production was discontinued. The development of an electronics line and also of a technically revolutionary casting machine proved to be of paramount importance to the further existence of the company.
The Shipping Companies acquired the controlling interest in Dansk Industri Syndikat A/S in 1959.

1961: A/S Roulunds Fabriker
A/S Roulunds Fabriker became a member of the A.P. Moller Group.
A/S Roulunds Fabriker in Odense was founded as a ropeworks as far back as 1736, but later moved into the manufacture of conveyor belts, brake linings and tranmission belts among other things.
Around 1960 the management of the factory was considering how to finance an essential reorganisation and modernisation process. It was a tempting possibility to hand over the controlling interest to the big American licencees, but A.P. Møller got wind of it and, in his own words, found it “natural for the Maersk Shipping Companies to help another Danish business when as now they had the means; more large enterprises in our country ought to do the same so that foreign countries do not find it so easy to push their way in and take over Danish businesses”.
The Shipping Companies then acquired the majority of the shares in the company. At the end of 1961, large areas of land were bought at Hjallese, south of Odense, where construction of a new factory commenced in the spring of 1962.
1970: A Danish IT Company
Mærsk Data became an independent business.
In 1956 A.P. Møller acquired a punched card machine. The machine was leased by IBM at DKK 38,000 a year and thus formed the basis for electronic data processing in the A.P. Moller Group. Three employees started working in the punched card department at Kongens Nytorv, Copenhagen.
On 11 March 1970, Mærsk Data became an independent business whose responsibility it was to handle A.P. Møller and the associated companies’ data processing. A total of 35 employees – partly from A.P. Møller’s processing department and partly new employees – consitituted Mærsk Data in the beginning.
1980: The Fleet’s First Car Carrier
Maersk Singapore Pte. Ltd. took delivery of its first carrier, MAERSK WAVE, from A.P. Møller
In October 1980 MAERSK WAVE was delivered, and in January 1981 her sister vessel MAERSK WIND followed. These vessels were the first “real” car carriers in the Maersk fleet – but the Company already had wide experience in the transport of cars.
In 1969 A.P. Møller took delivery of two bulk carriers, which functioned as car carriers for a number of years. In co-operation with the East Asiatic Company a number of voyages were made during the 1970s, where cars were transported from Japan on special between-decks in the holds of the vessels. The export went to West Africa, especially Nigeria, from where returned goods, e.g. grain, were loaded.
BELLA MÆRSK and BRIGIT MÆRSK, the two bulk carriers, had, however, the limitation that only passenger cars could be loaded. In time the transport requirement changed to larger cars, and A.P. Møller wanted to match the changed requirement.

The acquisition strengthened the coverage of Maersk Sealand and Safmarine of the above-mentioned areas.
